MOULTRIE — Moultrie is about to be full of several college students who come to work for those less fortunate.
Jean Brown, home missions coordinator at Heritage Church, said 78 University of Tennessee students and seven adult leaders will get into Moultrie today. Starting Monday, they will spread out around the city doing all sorts of mission projects.
Groups will be going to six homes around the city to do repair work, including roof and door repairs, and building wheelchair ramps, Brown said. Most of those people whose houses will be worked on are elderly people and in poor health, unable to do the repairs on their own.
In addition to the home repairs, Brown said groups of students will do repair and renovation work for various organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club, Crossroads Mission and the homeless shelter at Greater Newton Grove Baptist Church.
“They will be going all over the town,” Brown said.
Brown said the students, members of The Cross Ministry, spend their fall and spring breaks doing mission projects rather than go to the beach. Representatives from the group contacted church members David Brown and Roy and Cheryle Reeves about possibly coming to Moultrie for their spring break.
“They wanted to come down here and look over the projects,” Brown said. “This is their spring holiday.”
Along with Moultrie, Brown said the students also considered going to New Orleans and Charlotte, N.C., for the project.
The students will stay busy with other activities before they head back to Tennessee on Saturday, March 13, Brown said. Groups will be divided into men and women and will participate in dinner and other activities with the respective group at Heritage Church. One group will also go to the Moultrie Senior Center on Friday, March 12, and serve lunch to the seniors there.
Brown said the students will not go hungry, as churches across the community will provide them with dinner each night. Heritage also hopes to hold a bonfire Friday night to celebrate the students’ accomplishments while working to make lives better in Moultrie.
