A Moultrie man had a bad day on Monday when, police say, he tried to escape a pursuing officer in a car, hit a utility pole while trying to make a turn, had his car to catch on fire and then got chased down on foot.
William Eric Green, 51, 518 Northside Drive, was charged Monday with driving with suspended license, fleeing or attempting to elude, failure to maintain lane and expired tag.
Moultrie Police Department reports said that an officer driving at about 11:30 a.m. on Fourth Avenue Southeast met Green driving a 1994 Buick LeSabre. The officer, knowing Green’s license was suspended because he previously had arrested him, turned around and pursued the Buick with sirens and emergency lights on.
Green accelerated immediately and turned left onto Fifth Avenue Southeast, took a right on 10th and then crashed while trying to turn right on Overlook Drive. After the collision the Buick caught fire, police said, and Green, who ran, was chased down a short distance from the crash scene.
