Oncology Center holds open house

MOULTRIE — In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness month, The Oncology Center at Colquitt Regional Medical Center held an open house on Oct. 26 on the oncology floor.

The open house was coordinated by the oncology staff, including Dr. Michael Alleyne, oncologist, and Brian Elliott, director of oncology. The staff welcomed employees, patients and supporters to come see a traveling art exhibit that included paintings by cancer patients.

The exhibit featured “Lilly Oncology on Canvas:  Expressions of a Cancer Journey Art Competition and Exhibition.” A selection of 25 paintings and photographs from all over the United States and Puerto Rico were displayed during the open house. Patients who were diagnosed with any type of cancer — as well as their families, friends, caregivers and health providers — were asked to express through art and narrative the life-affirming changes that give their cancer journeys meaning.

Also during the open house, The American Red Cross made a contribution to the oncology fund at Colquitt Regional Medical Center. Proceeds from a recent fundraiser, the money will be used to assist cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy treatments and having financial difficulties. During the month of October, The American Red Cross accepted pledges of $1 per unit of blood collected during their October blood drive. A total of 63 units were collected. Those pledges, along with other monetary donations benefitting the oncology fund, totaled $1,030. All of the proceeds will benefit oncology patients receiving local treatment at Colquitt Regional Medical Center.

The Oncology Center has also started a new program called the Colquitt Regional Medical Center Pathfinder Oncology Library. The library gives people the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients by donating books, DVDs and CDs from Amazon.com. The free lending library is available to cancer patients and their families to provide them with the latest information material on cancer prevention, diagnosis, coping, nutrition, care giving, treatment and clinical trials from cancer-related organizations.

Several cancer-related organizations provide the educational material. Colquitt Regional Medical Center obtains and distributes resources from these organizations.

“I am excited that the staff and community are supporting our oncology services,” says Jim Matney, Colquitt Regional Medical Center president and CEO. “Our community and current patients, along with the staff, came together to create this library as an educational resource for our patients and their families.”

For more information on the Pathfinder Oncology Library or to find out how to make a donation, please contact the Oncology Center at Colquitt Regional Medical Center at 890-3514.
