MOULTRIE —
Prison and law enforcement agencies were searching Saturday afternoon for the second of two escapees who broke out of Colquitt Count Correctional Institution on Friday night.
Authorities caught up with the first on Saturday in the Macon area and also recovered a vehicle stolen in Colquitt County.
Officers were searching Saturday for Bobby Lee Gunter, 28, in eastern Colquitt County in an area stretching from Old Adel Road to Georgia Highway 37. They concentrated there after receiving information that Gunter was in that area, prison Warden Billy Howell said.
Efforts were hindered by the weather, which prevented helicopters from flying, he said.
"We have pretty good reason to believe he's in that area," said Howell, who was in the area coordinating the search. "This weather has had us messed up. We feel like we'e got a pretty good chance to get him between now and dark."
Gunter is 6-foot-2-inches tall, bald and has blue eyes, the Georgia Department of Corrections web site said. He was serving a sentence after being convicted of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, theft of a motor vehicle or parts, forgery and obstruction of an officer.
Howell advised anyone who sees the escapee to call 911 and not try to apprach him.
Earlier Saturday James David Miller, 29, was taken into custody in the Macon area. He was being held at a state prison in the area. Officers with the Colquitt County Sheriff's Office, Moultrie Police Department and Department of Corrections, including the fugitive squad were involved in the search throughout the night.
"We felt like Miller might be going that way," Howell said.
An initial investigation indicates that Gunter and Miller shorted out a fire escape door to get out of the facility, Howell said. They later split up.
Miller was serving a sentence on charges of burglary, theft by taking, entering vehicle and theft by receiving stolen property.
