Girl not seriously hurt, police say

MOULTRIE — A hit-and-run driver who struck a girl Wednesday evening during a car chase was captured after he abandoned a stolen vehicle and fled on foot, according to the Moultrie Police Department.

An officer at the scene said the girl apparently was not seriously injured and was not taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

The driver did pose a serious risk as he drove recklessly through the area around Shaw Gymnasium and down an alley in which pedestrians had to move to avoid being struck.

The crime spree apparently started when a Chevrolet Caprice was stolen between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday

Dee Menosky of Pavo, who said the car belongs to a friend, was at the scene of the car chase on Sixth Avenue Northwest beside Shaw Gym.

He said that friends located the Chevrolet behind Shy Manor and called police. The thief apparently heard that the owner had shown up there and arrived in a second stolen vehicle, a black Ford Explorer.

Upon seeing a police officer there, he fled in the Explorer.

Parts of the chase took the Explorer down Sixth Street Northwest, where the driver turned left on Sixth Avenue, before turning down an alley and reversing course, an officer at the scene said.

The driver reversed course, at one point driving through a fence before stopping on Sixth Avenue Northwest, where he got out and ran from police.

Clyde Howard of Moultrie said his Explorer was stolen when he stopped at Jenkins Store on First Street Northwest.

“I went inside to get some sodas and some light bulbs,” he said. “I came outside and it was gone.”

Howard said he is still trying to come to grips with the theft of the truck and that it had hit a child.

“That’s crazy,” he said. “It’s hard to believe.”
