Car hits 2 pedestrians on Hwy. 319

MOULTRIE — A Moultrie woman remained hospitalized Wednesday after she and a 7-year-old boy were hit by a car Friday night.

Cynthia Surls, 42, of Moultrie, was injured as she tried to cross Highway 319 and was hit by a car. She was taken to Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, and a hospital spokesperson there said she was listed in fair condition Wednesday. The 7-year-old boy was also taken to Archbold following the accident, but his condition was not known.

The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) said a Nissan Sentra, driven by Laura Roberts, 63, of Moultrie, was on Highway 319. At 6:53 p.m. Friday, she approached the Shady Grove Road intersection when two pedestrians, Surls and the 7-year-old boy, walked onto the roadway.

Roberts and three witnesses stated the two pedestrians ran out into the roadway, and the GSP said she tried to stop. The two pedestrians were hit by the Sentra and thrown into the air. One was thrown into the middle turn lane of Highway 319 while the other was thrown into the right lane of Highway 319 South.

Surls and the 7-year-old boy were taken to Archbold for treatment following the collision, the GSP said. Charges against Roberts were pending the outcome of an investigation into the accident.
