Game room shut down; no charges

MOULTRIE — Moultrie police officers shut down a local business Wednesday afternoon that they said was operating a game room without a license.

Officers dispersed a large crowd that had gathered at Third Avenue Grocery on Third Avenue Northwest about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. When officers checked to see if he had the proper license to operate the game room Wednesday afternoon, it was found he did not.

Officers went back to the store about 1:20 p.m. Wednesday and spoke with the owner, Calvin Simpson. He allowed the officers to do a video surveillance of the store, and they found two coin-operated pool tables with pool sticks and chalk, snack foods, hot dogs and hot dogs buns, bags of ice, two-liter drinks with cups and coolers. A meat slicer was also found in the back of the store.

Officers told Simpson the store most be closed down until he either gets a permit to operate a game room or remove the pool tables. He told the officers the pool tables would be removed Thursday morning and he stated he was unaware he could not prepare food at the store. Because of Simpson’s cooperation with officers, he was not charged with anything related to the incident.
