Knives were weapons in weekend violence

MOULTRIE — The Moultrie Police Department responded to three separate violent incidents where a knife was used over the weekend. They were able to arrest one person, and another person was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center for injuries.

Kinsey Shaw Sr., 60, of 1406 Third Ave. S.E., was charged with aggravated assault. He allegedly pulled a knife during a fight on Fifth Street Southeast Friday evening, police said.

Officers met with James Jones and Deborah Shaw on Fifth Street Southeast at 7:56 p.m. Friday. They stated Jones and Kinsey Shaw allegedly got into a fight at the intersection of Fifth Street Southeast and Seventh Avenue Southeast.

During the fight, Kinsey Shaw allegedly pulled a knife and tried to cut Jones with it but was not successful. Shaw then left the scene of the fight but was found at his house, placed under arrest and was taken to Colquitt County Jail.

In a second incident, a woman used a knife as a way to defend herself from a male acquaintance Friday night, police reports stated.

Brandy Head reported she and the male acquaintance were driving home to Coolidge and got into an argument about 11:43 p.m. Friday.

During the argument, the male acquaintance punched Head in the head and pulled out two hair extensions. She got out of the car briefly, and he began punching her again as she continued to drive back to Coolidge, the report said.

As Head drove, she grabbed a knife that was in her Chevrolet Cavalier and swung it at her attacker after she had stopped the car again. She believes he was cut on the right shoulder or on his back, but he got out and left the scene. Head’s eyes were red, and she had a bloodied lip and a lump on the right side of her head from the incident, police reports said.

In a third incident, a man reported he was stabbed twice during a fight early Saturday morning. David Cortez reported he was one of several Hispanic men involved in a fight at Regency Village about 12:10 a.m. Saturday.

During the fight, someone stabbed Cortez in the upper leg and upper arm, and it appeared he had other knife wounds on his hands. The fight had broken up when the officer arrived at the scene, and Cortez was taken to Colquitt Regional. A hospital spokesperson said he was treated for his injuries and released Saturday.
