Center for war stress on drawing board

ALBANY— Rep. Sanford Bishop and Phoebe Putney Hospital announced Monday that the fiscal year 2008 federal Defense Appropriations bill includes $1.6 million to help construct a “Regional Center of Excellence” to develop technologies for and treat sufferers of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

“Many men and women from Southwest Georgia serving overseas right now will, unfortunately, continue to require care for combat-related injuries long after their return home. The ability to treat those injuries locally not only will ease their transition to civilian life, but also will allow them to recover faster and more completely,” Bishop said. “I commend Phoebe Putney Hospital for being on the cusp of these new treatments and technologies which will be so beneficial to the people of the Second District.”

An estimated one in five men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan will suffer the effects of PTSD at some point in their lives, said Bishop’s press release. Symptoms of PTSD range from nightmares and flashbacks to dangerous biological conditions and often interfere with an individual’s ability to carry on with daily life.
