MOULTRIE — In support of the U.S. Department of Energy’s proclamation, Southwest Georgia Community Action Council, Inc. will recognize Tuesday, Oct. 30, as National Weatherization Day. The Department of Energy uses this day to acknowledge the efforts of weatherization programs that assist low-income households in reducing energy costs by providing energy efficient improvements to their homes.
Southwest Georgia Community Action Council, Inc. annually receives state funds from Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority to operate the Weatherization Assistance Program.
“I am very proud of our staff’s commitment to the Weatherization Assistance Program. Our weatherization team is truly focused on helping southwest Georgia citizens conserve their energy resources,” said Myrtis Mulkey-Ndawula, chief executive officer for the agency.
The sgency provides weatherization assistance to low-income families located within a 13-county area. The program addresses energy saving measures that usually include: caulking, glazing, weather-stripping, attic and wall insulation, water heater repair, AC ductwork repair, compact fluorescent bulbs, low-flow faucet aerators, smoke detectors, and minor energy related repairs.
The Weatherization Program staff includes Al Knighton, Samuel Perez, Dusniel Alvarez, Robin Cooper, Lou Beth Parker and William Weatherspoon.
“Weatherization truly makes a difference in our community and the state of Georgia,” Mulkey-Ndawula said.
The average home energy savings for a home that has been weatherized is about $358. Energy bills are reduced by 23 percent for gas heated homes, and for every dollar invested in the program, Weatherization returns $2.69 to the household and society.
