MOULTRIE — For the second time in less than a week, a call to authorities has uncovered a possible dogfighting operation.
An anonymous person contacted the Humane Society of Colquitt County about possible dogfighting at a house on Pierce Road Tuesday. An animal control officer went to the house about 3:25 p.m., and a Colquitt County sheriff’s deputy was called to the scene.
The deputy reported dogs, all of them pit bulls, were found there on short leashes and had scars on their bodies that showed they had possibly been fought. Several of the dogs were also kept on their leashes without food and water, and the animal control officer said he believed the dogs were raised to be fought.
A Colquitt County sheriff’s investigator was called to the house, and the scene was turned over to him for further investigation. The deputy was able to get the name of the homeowner, but no arrests were made as of Wednesday afternoon.
On Friday morning, an anonymous person reported possible dogfighting at 805 First Ave. S.W. in Moultrie, and the Humane Society found 15 pit bull dogs, including eight puppies, at the house. Several of the dogs have scars that showed they had possibly been fought, and Xavier Barber, 25, was charged with 14 counts of animal cruelty, dogfighting and obstruction when he arrived at the scene.
The dogs were taken to the Humane Society and are expected to be euthanized. Earlier this week, the Humane Society expressed hope the young puppies could be adopted to a rescue agency.
