Police chase ends when truck slams into house
MOULTRIE — A Moultrie man faces multiple charges after he allegedly led deputies on a high-speed chase and crashed into a house early Sunday morning.
George Wallace, 31, of 909 Second Ave. N.W., was charged with criminal damage to property (second degree), attempting to elude officers, obstruction, speeding, DUI, failure to maintain lane, failure to stop at a stop sign and driving with a suspended license.
A Colquitt County sheriff’s deputy spotted a light-colored truck run off the road as it tried to pass another vehicle as both turned onto Veterans Parkway from Highway 319 at 4:07 a.m. Sunday. The truck accelerated, and the deputy clocked him going 76 mph in a 55-mph zone, the deputy’s report said.
The deputy went into the Veterans Parkway median and tried to pull the truck over, but it allegedly reached speeds over 100 mph going south on Veterans Parkway. The truck then turned onto Hutchinson Drive, still at a high rate of speed, and was weaving from side to side.
The truck went through the intersection of Hutchinson Drive and Clay Street and slid through a front yard and hit the house at 117 Clay St. The driver, later identified as Wallace, got out of the truck and allegedly ran from the deputy. He was placed under arrest after he tripped and hit a trash can.
The house’s occupant, Pamela Carlisle, stated her children were in rooms near where the truck ran into the house. They were taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center for treatment, and the Red Cross of Colquitt County paid for them to stay in a local motel temporarily.
The impact from the accident caused severe damage to the house, knocking it almost a foot off of its foundation, the deputy’s report said. It was not known at the time of the report if the house was still structurally sound and safe to live in.
Following the accident and chase, Olivia Ponder-Wallace reported Monday her white Dodge pickup truck was stolen from Newton Grove Baptist Church on Second Avenue Northwest between 1 a.m. Friday and 3:31 a.m. Sunday. She was told the truck had been involved in the incident and she would be contacted by an investigator for further information.
