MOULTRIE — A woman who allegedly killed five dogs, including three puppies, April 13 was charged in the incident Friday.
Deborah Spivey, 40, of 1500 Hutchinson Drive, was charged with five counts of cruelty to animals.
EMS personnel and a police officer were called to a house on Hutchinson Drive by Jimmy Gardner about 11 p.m. April 13 where a woman, identified as Spivey, allegedly was threatening to commit suicide. When the officer arrived, he found Spivey had a small laceration on her left wrist, but it was not bleeding.
Gardner asked Spivey about her dogs, and she allegedly stated she had killed them and hid them in a “barn.” A search of the barn did not turn up the dogs, and Spivey showed Gardner and the officer where she had put the dogs after she was asked about their whereabouts a second time.
The officer spotted a plastic bag where the woman pointed to in a shed, and Gardner pulled a bag out of a corner. Inside the bags they found five Chihuahua dogs, two adults and three puppies, and Spivey allegedly told them each of their names.
When the officer spoke with the woman, she allegedly stated she had choked the dogs and make a choking motion with her hands. She did not appear to be upset or remorseful about the dogs, police reports said, and Gardner stated he would bury the dogs in the back yard.
Spivey was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center for treatment, and the officer took out warrants on the woman for cruelty to animal charges April 16. She was placed under arrest after she was released from Southwestern State Hospital in Thomasville.
