MOULTRIE — A Moultrie man who was shot then allegedly kidnapped a woman and a 2-year-old child Monday morning was charged in the incident Wednesday.
Christopher Bernard Dixon, 38, of 1108 Grant Court, was charged Wednesday with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of kidnapping and reckless conduct. A spokesperson at Tift Regional Medical Center said he was discharged from there Wednesday, and arrest reports indicate he was released into police custody.
Moultrie Police Capt. Tommy Rabon, commander of the Criminal Investigations Unit, said preliminary reports of the incident were not correct.
Rabon said Dixon allegedly went to the house at 906 Joe Louis Ave. Monday and waited for Casanda Byrd. After children at the house left for school, Dixon allegedly approached Byrd about 8:55 a.m., and she confronted him as he came to the house.
Byrd had gone to tell another man in the house, Edward Neil Huntley, 37, of 906 W. First St. in Adel, to hold the 2-year-old girl while she confronted Dixon, Rabon said. Dixon came into the house and was pushed into the bedroom where Huntley and the 2-year-old were inside.
Once Dixon and Huntley confronted each other, Rabon said Dixon allegedly fired one shot. Huntley then allegedly returned several shots, hitting Dixon in the arm at least once. Huntley was charged Monday with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in relation to the alleged incident.
Rabon said Dixon went into a bathroom and Huntley left the house, possibly thinking Dixon had left. After Huntley left the house, Dixon came out of the bathroom, still with the gun drawn, and allegedly forced Byrd and the 2-year-old into his car. He drove them into Worth and Tift counties before dropping them off near Ashburn. They were later picked up by her brother-in-law.
During the alleged kidnapping, Rabon said, Byrd contacted her sister and told her what was happening. The sister, who was in Sylvester when she received Byrd’s call, called 911 and reported it. A Moultrie police officer responded to the McDonald’s on First Avenue Southeast because the sister did not specify she was near the McDonald’s in Sylvester when she called in.
Dixon went to the house at 1101 W. Golden Road in Tift County, where he is originally from, and someone there reported his injuries, Rabon said. Capt. Mike Walker of the Tift County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigations Division said deputies responded, and Dixon was taken to Tift Regional Medical Center by Tift County EMS.
On the Wednesday morning following the shooting, Byrd reported a thief kicked open the front door of her house. The burglar stole a Sanyo 27-inch television, four herringbone necklaces, a Gold Kist herringbone peanut bracelet, nine rings and clothes from the house and an Audiovox 10-inch speaker with speakerbox and a 600-watt amplifier from Byrd’s Infiniti J-30. The value of the items reported stolen was about $2,409.
Rabon said there did not appear to be a connection between the incident Monday and the burglary. No new information or suspects were available about the burglary as of Friday afternoon, he said.
