MOULTRIE — Betty Moore of Tifton has been chosen to represent Moultrie Technical College at the EAGLE Leadership Institute Feb. 7 through Feb. 9. The Leadership Institute recognizes and honors those students who have demonstrated superior achievement in adult literacy classes and programs.
The Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education (DTAE), through its Office of Adult Literacy, sponsors the annual Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) Leadership Institute.
Moore, a 58-year-old GED student at Moultrie Tech’s Tifton campus, was born in Houston County and is the mother of two adult children, grandmother of three and great-grandmother of one.
“I could not work on getting my GED earlier because I had to work and send my children to school,” Moore said. “After I retired, I said that it was time for me, and I started to school.”
Moore enjoys reading the Bible and educational books and watching detective and educational films. Upon completion of her GED, she plans to continue her education by taking college-level courses and substitute teaching.
“Betty works hard and tries to encourage her fellow students,” Sandra Griffin, Moore’s adult literacy instructor at MTC, said. “She has gained the respect of other students and is the voice of reason. She looks on the humorous side of life.”
EAGLE is the first statewide program in the nation that recognizes and rewards excellence among students enrolled in the adult literacy programs. This student recognition program is designed to create greater awareness of educational opportunities that are available in local communities across the state and to foster greater involvement in lifelong learning pursuits.
