MOULTRIE — A 77-year-old man tried to cash a fraudulent check for a fake jackpot at Bank of America Wednesday.
Apparently a victim of fraud, the man had received a check from sender Talbots Accounts Payable Expense of Hingham, Mass. Fleet Bank of Portland, Maine, was printed on the fraudulent check. Atlantic Investment Group of Vancouver, Wash., is the group stated to be funding the check, police reports said.
A letter to the elderly man said he won the “Prize America Jackpot” in a “lump sum” of $100,000, but to claim his prize he had to pay the sender more than $2,000 in legal and administrative fees by money gram wire transfer or Western Union, Moultrie Police Capt. Tommy Rabon said.
“It’s all just a scam. That’s all it is,” Rabon said.
The man became upset with bank tellers for not returning the check, reports said, but Bank of America policy mandates that all fraudulent checks must be sent to the security department.
Other mail scams circulating recently claim that the recipient has inherited money from long lost relatives, but the catch is the same — the recipient must send money to process the claim. Sadly, Rabon said, gullible people fall prey to the con.
