The Moultrie Junior Woman’s Club international affairs committee made several donations in an effort to recognize World Food Day. This is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness and understanding and to encourage year-round action regarding issues of hunger and food security. The committee felt that their efforts should address issues of hunger at a local level this year due to the continued state of the economy. The Colquitt County Food Bank and Friendship Community Kitchen were chosen as the 2009 recipients. The food bank received six cases of peanut butter from the MJWC along with several cases of Peter Pan Peanut Butter donated by ConAgra Foods of Sylvester, Ga. The ConAgra Foods donation was secured by committee member Julie Montgomery. Friendship Community Kitchen, a weekly feeding program for the homeless, which was started in January 2009 by Sam and Barbara McCord and their church Friendship Alliance, was chosen to receive a donation of $150 to go towards the purchase of food supplies for the weekly Wednesay night meals. United Nations Day was Oct. 24 and has been celebrated since 1948. In recognition of United Nations Day, a book about the United Nations was donated to the Children’s Library at the Moultrie-Colquitt County Public Library. The book should serve as an educational resource for children and teachers of Colquitt County.
