MOULTRIE — Colquitt County Retired Educators Association met in December at the Odom Library. A large group was in attendance for the Christmas meeting with refreshments served.
Member, Shirley Kern, gave a devotion referring to Luke 2:17-19 and reminded the group that some countries are not allowed to celebrate Christmas. She told the group about her family living in Cuba, working for the American Embassy, and how the Cuban people seemed to marvel over the Christmas tree that the support flight delivered from America. Hoping that change would someday occur for the people, she shared her own little tree with a special friend. She reminded CCREA members of the many freedoms they have in America.
The pledge to the American flag was led by Billy Mock. Program chairman, Mary Dixon, introduced Travis Kern, music director at Colquitt County High School. He led the CCHS Boys’ Choir in selected Christmas songs.
Mildred Rentz and Dorothy Weatherly led the group in singing “Happy Birthday” to two celebrants for December. This was followed by committee reports, minutes and a budget report.
Aileen McNair encouraged them to read the “Lamplighter” newsletter for the month for important information concerning Georgia Department of Revenue Tax Recovery Adjustment.
Dot Mims stated that Christmas cards were recently mailed to members that are shut-ins. Joanne Smith encouraged those involved in mentoring students in the schools to continue and Leo Cardwell noted that all donations received at this meeting would go to the Colquitt County Food Bank.
President Janice Barry stated that GREA now has 19,357 members and that the state goal of having 20,000 is reachable. She also mentioned that CCREA has increased the organization by 10% this year with two members this month. She gave a special “thank you” to the hospitality committee and members for the refreshments.
The monthly raffle was held and the meeting was adjourned by Barry.
