Harveys hold 93rd reunion

FUNSTON — On Aug. 14, the 93rd Annual Harvey Family Reunion was held at the Funston Community Center in memory of Caleb and Eliza Shell Harvey.

The reunion has brought family members together from all over the United States to the origins of the Harvey family at Center Hill.

In Dec. 1899, the Harvey family came to Center Hill in covered wagons driving along a few cows. They made the 85 mile trip from south of Cordele in three days. During the years the children married into the local families of Barton, High, Tucker, Taylor, Suber, Ashley, Strickland, Ricks, Murphy, Williams, and Studstill.

Visitation began at 3 p.m., with Tom Tillman providing music for everyone. Accompanied by Mike Folsom, Tom and Mike lead the family members in singing songs, which seemed to bring much enjoyment. Don Williams spoke on Caleb’s youngest child Cena May Harvey, who married Henry Saxton Studstill. He reminded everyone that Cena married later in life because she took care of her parents. Being the youngest unmarried child at the time, she took on the responsibility of her parents and there was no time to do the usual social activities for young people. Many of the family remembered Cena and her “caring ways.”

An annual treat of boiled peanuts was provided by Hardy Tillman. A covered dish supper was provided by the family with the blessing given by Don Williams.

The memorial was given by John Godwin for family member Eric Bates. The minutes were read by John Godwin and the treasurer’s report was given by Dorenda Strickland. The officers were to remain the same for the year 2011. They include as president, Irene Godwin; vice president, Kelly White; secretary, John Godwin; and treasurer, Dorenda Strickland.

Brother and sister, Don Williams and Frances Folsom, were recognized for being the only grandchildren of Caleb Harvey in attendance. Gifts were presented to Frances Folsom for being the oldest descendant; Harrison Lampman for being the youngest descendant; and the family of Melanie Tillman, daughter-in-law of Tom and Sarah Tillman, for traveling the farthest — from the Bahamas.

The evening ended with the annual family auction. Family member Hardy Tillman was the auctioneer, with the assistance of Tom Tillman.

Family members attending from out of town were, Debbie and Tommy Griffin of Mobile
