MOULTRIE — Richard Edwards of Colony Bank entertained the Golden Harvest Group of Calvary Baptist Church at their May meeting held May 21.
Edwards sang “Somebody is Praying,” “If that isn’t Love,” and by special requests “The Anchor Holds” and “Beulah Land.”
Lois Sinclair called the meeting to order and thanked everyone for coming. It being Sinclair’s birthday, she was presented with a birthday cake. Julian McCorkle gave thanks for the wonderful covered dish meal enjoyed by all.
After the meal, Sinclair called the meeting back to order. She thanked Shirley Griner and Jeanette Dochterman for the table decorations.
Horace Thompson gave the devotion for the group. His scripture was from the 12th chapter of Judges and he commented that we should all think before we speak especially to God when we are praying to Him and making promises to God.
Florene Horsley, Gladys Smith and Lois Sinclair celebrated birthdays during the month of May. The door prizes were won by Anne Castleberry, Julian McCorkle and Janie Lott.
Marvin Martin was recognized as the Star of the Month for May. He and his wife of 60 years have two living children. He has coached children of all ages in ball. He was a Boy Scout when he was a child and a leader as an adult. He was a very athletic having played basketball, baseball, softball and football. He actually played minor league baseball when there was a minor league in Moultrie. His first job was a newspaper route that he made riding his bicycle.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II. After his coming home from the service, he worked at Swift & Co for 38 years. After retiring from Swift he worked in the office at SunnyLand, and Lykes and worked a second job at Century 21 Real Estate.
Martin was saved and baptized at the age of 14 or 15. He has been a deacon of Calvary Baptist Church for more than 60 years and up until recently because of illness he was always very faithful and supportative of anything that was going on at his church from stewardship to his attendance. His peers said Martin has always been a very caring and helping person.
There were only 23 present because of vacations, sickness and other appointments. Those present at the meeting were Anne Castleberry, Bob and Vicky Dixon, Jeanette Dochterman, LaTrelle Ferriero, the Rev. Wayne Goff, Shirley Griner, Florene Horsley, Bernadette Kerr, Julia Lastinger, Janie Lott, Julian and Mildred McCorkle, Deiva Money, Eriene Murphy, Gene Reagin, Lois Sinclair, Gladys Smith, Betty Terry, Edna Thompson, Horace Thompson, Frances Young and Richard Edwards.
