In celebration of ‘Teacher Appreciation Week,’ on May 5, the R.D. Smith ‘Just Bring It’ afterschool students did a short essay to their favorite teacher. Each participant’s name was submitted in a drawing. Amy Putnam, a 6th grade teacher at Willie J. Williams, won a gift certificate to Cato’s. Her name was selected by Michael Goss Florence, right. The students also participated in a ‘I Love You, Mom’ contest in honor of Mother’s Day. Vontrell McNeil, top, was the winner. He was given a Belk’s gift card and a poem titled ‘A Mother’s Love’ to present to his mom. The 5th Annual Awards Ceremony was held on Friday, May 22. O’derian Edwards brought the welcome to the 50 attendees; Demartell Turner read a poem titled ‘Friends’; Leah Reynolds, the center’s aide did the presentation of awards; and Darlene Reynolds gave an inspirational speech encouraging the children to continue to do their best and challenging them to read this summer. O’derian Edwards won the Academic Award; Florence received the Excellence Award and the Outstanding Student Award; and the Most Improved Student Award went to Javarius McIntyre.

A training camp for imagination
“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.” These are the words of Albert Einstein. So it would stand to reason that cultivating and encouraging creative imaginations would be a priority if Mr. Einstein recognized the value of this important mind attribute. I am always impressed by people with great imaginations and how they create great works of art or new inventions.
