MOULTRIE —
The Moultrie Junior Woman’s Club recently recognized the Rev. R. O. Calhoun, pastor of Union Missionary Baptist Church, as the October Mentor of the Month. Calhoun moved to Moultrie four years ago and has participated in the mentoring program since moving to town.
He said he chooses to mentor because he feels it is a second chance to raise young men and help them in any way he can, according to a press release from the YMCA, which oversees the mentoring program.
“Dr. Calhoun has a huge heart for this community and sees the YMCA’s Mentor Program as a way he could give back to the community.,” the release said “He says he has reaped the larger reward through mentoring as he looks forward to the time he spends with the two young men he mentors.”
Calhoun sees his influence on the boys’ lives as they mature, the Y said.
“He believes there is hope in reaching and teaching the younger generations in the community and enjoys being a part of what the YMCA’s Mentor Program is accomplishing,” the Y said. “Dr. Calhoun encourages the community to become more involved in young people’s lives, as they are the future of our community.”
