A Colquitt Countian will compete at the state level in the Georgia GAE Spelling Bee next month.
Jett Kiminas of Sunset Elementary won the District 9 competition Saturday at C.A. Gray Junior High School. Advancing with him will be runner-up Davia Allen of Early County.
Eighteen students sat down for the bee at 10 a.m. It took some 26 rounds and almost two hours to winnow them down to the winner.
First-round departures resulted from misspellings of “typhoon,” “necessary” and “crescent.” Three other students left in the second round and six in the third.
After a fault-free fourth round, two spellers left on misspellings of “castanets” and “prosaic.” Another error-less round followed, and one student was removed in the seventh round by misspelling a word this reporter could not hear properly.
The three remaining students continued spelling without a mistake for the next six rounds, when Michael Jones Jr. of Clay County misspelled “satori,” a state of sudden enlightenment.
Kaminas and Allen sat alone on the stage.
With the field narrowed to two, the rules of the bee changed. Beginning then, if a contestant spells a word incorrectly, his opponent must correctly spell the missed word then a new word to be declared the winner.
Allen and Kaminas spelled back and forth without a mistake for another 13 rounds when Allen was asked to spell “egalitarian.”
“E-G-L …” she began, then fell silent as she realized her error. She stood at the microphone a moment then took her seat.
Kaminas easily spelled “egalitarian” then was faced with “staccato.” After asking for the word’s language of origin, he calmly spelled, “S-T-A-C-C-A-T-O” for the win.
