ABAC brings Near Peer mentors to Colquitt County High

MOULTRIE — Five students at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College have been selected to participate in the Near Peer Service Learning Program, which allows ABAC students to serve as mentors to Colquitt County High School (CCHS) students.

The five ABAC students include Carrie Carnes, an early childhood education major; Candace Jackson, a nursing major; Hannah Saunders, a pharmacy major; Natalie Sconiers, a dentistry major; and Tevores Sumlin, a middle grades education major. All the peer tutors are from Colquitt County.

“The hope is that high school students will be more receptive to hearing about the process of applying for college and the transition to college from peers closer to their own age,” said Darby Sewell, dean of the ABAC School of Human Sciences and project director of the Near Peer program. “ABAC completed a Near Peer project at Tift County High School last fall that was successful and resulted in students applying and being accepted to college. We have the same expectation for CCHS.”

ABAC and CCHS will work together on the Near Peer project from January to May. The ABAC students will meet with students every Thursday at the high school during the advisory period. During this time students will focus on topics including how to select a college, expectations for college course work, and important information on applications and financial aid. The class will involve the Near Peer mentors of ABAC, a group of 11th grade CCHS students, CCHS counselor Cathy Nobles, and Executive Director Gail Dillard of ABAC on the Square and Early Admission Programs.

The ABAC students will take an educational service learning class during the spring semester.  In the class, the mentors will become well versed with the application and financial aid processes, along with other important aspects of gaining entrance into college so they can help CCHS students with their applications.

“The Near Peer program at Colquitt County High School aims to help high school juniors get ready to apply for college during their senior year,” said Dillard. “To meet this goal, ABAC peers will help the students in the program walk through the college selection process from selecting a major to finding scholarships for which they might be eligible. Each ABAC peer will work with only four students and can, therefore, provide individual attention as each student goes through what can be a daunting college application process.”

Funding for the Near Peer program is provided through Georgia’s College Access Challenge Grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The University System of Georgia directs this statewide grant in collaboration with the Governor’s Office and Alliance of Education Agency Heads.
