Southwest Georgia program wins award for most GED test scholarships

ATLANTA — The Southwest Georgia Regional Certified Literate Community Program (CLCP) received the FY 2012 Advocacy Award at the Technical College System of Georgia’s (TCSG) Adult Education conference in October in Atlanta.

The award is given to the region that gives the most GED test scholarships each fiscal year. The Southwest Georgia Region gave 502 GED test scholarships during fiscal year 2012, which was more than any other CLCP in the state.

Georgia’s CLCP was established in 1990 to promote literacy in the State of Georgia through local community collaboration. The Southwest Georgia Regional CLCP completed the first regional application to the state-wide program in 2005 and has a goal of reaching 44,776 adult students within 10 years. The region includes Baker, Calhoun, Colquitt, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Grady, Lee, Miller, Mitchell, Seminole, Terrell, Thomas and Worth counties. There are currently over 76,000 Southwest Georgia residents who, at 25 years old, have not completed a high school education.

The Southwest Georgia Regional CLCP works closely with the adult education directors in area technical colleges to provide assistance to adult students enrolled in GED classes and those taking the GED test. The cost of the test is currently $160, more than many adult students can afford. The CLCP provides test scholarships, dictionaries to third graders and books to children living in poverty.
