Taylor wins spelling duel

MOULTRIE — More than half of Tuesday’s Colquitt County Spelling Bee was a two-person duel between Alaina Taylor of Funston Elementary School and Heaven Robinson of Cox Elementary.

The event started with 12 contestants — one from each elementary school plus Willie J. Williams Middle School and C.A. Gray Junior High. At the end of the third round, it was down to three: Taylor, Robinson and Jacob Lawhorne of Norman Park Elementary. Along the way, spellers fell to words like hibachi, tithe, diorama and sitzmark.

As the fourth round began, Lawhorne misspelled the word anchovy to set up the one-on-one stage of the bee.

When only two spellers are left, the rules of the bee change. Prior to that, when a speller misspelled a word, he was out. But when one of the final two spellers misspells a word, his opponent must spell it correctly and then spell his own word right to win.

That rule kicked in almost immediately as Robinson misspelled wanderlust, and so did Taylor.

Then Robinson misspelled Sputnik, and so did Taylor.

Robinson spelled a word correctly, then Taylor misspelled gristle … and so did Robinson.

Taylor spelled a word correctly, then Robinson misspelled pinafore … and so did Taylor.

Robinson then misspelled feldspar, but Taylor spelled it correctly and then correctly spelled hyphen to win the bee.

Taylor will represent Colquitt County in the district bee Feb. 25 at C.A. Gray Junior High School. If Taylor cannot compete, Robinson will take her place.
