2012 Civic Groups (N-Z)

MOULTRIE — Below is information on Colquitt County's community organizations with names beginning with the letters N through Z, as published in the 2012 Community Guide.

As The Observer prepares the 2013 Community Guide, set for publication March 31, we are asking local groups to confirm their information below and email Adelia Ladson at adelia.ladson@gaflnews.com to either confirm or change it. If your group is not represented below, please email her to add it to the list. She can also be reached by phone at (229) 985-4545.

We cannot publish information on groups that don't contact us, so please get in touch with us. Deadline is Tuesday, March 12.

Civic Groups N-Z

Phi Beta Lambda

Purpose: To promote better business skills in college students through close work with local business leaders and through competitions in business skill events and to promote better civics and community relations through charitable work.

Activities: Community service projects throughout the year. The group competes at district, state and national levels, traveling to other colleges for competitions based on business fields like Web site design, public speaking, programming, accounting principles, finance, word processing, sales representation, telecommunications, marketing and management.

Meetings: Monthly at Moultrie Technical College.

Eligibility: Must be a student at Moultrie Technical College.

Dues: $10 (includes local, state and national dues).



Pilot Club

Contact: Norma McKellar at 985-6540.

Purpose: To improve the quality of life in communities throughout the world. Members perform varied hands-on service project with a special emphasis in the area of brain-related disorders.

Meetings: At 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at Western Sizzlin

Eligibility: Invitation only



Rotary Club

Meetings: 1 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Sunset Country Club

Eligibility: By invitation



Seedtime and Harvest Church

Purpose: To grow healthy families into God’s purposes and plans through teaching and preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Activities: Church teaching and preaching; family seminars and activities; elementary school tutoring for CRCT; food distribution for the needy; bus ministry; Sunday school teaching; men’s and women’s activities; children’s activities.

Meetings: Weekly worship service held on Sundays at 11 a.m.; pastoral teaching held on Wednesdays at 7 p.m.; Sunday school held at 9:45 a.m.; women’s home Bible study held on a monthly basis; men’s prayer breakfast held on a quarterly basis.

Eligibility: Everyone welcome.



Shaw Senior Gladiators

Contact: Samuel “Coach” Stewart, 890-5461.

Purpose: To improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle through exercise and social interactions with other senior citizens.

Activities: Exercising, card games, collecting and sending items to the Veterans’ Hospital, providing food boxes to families at Thanksgiving and Christmas, responding to families in crisis, providing items to food bank, visiting the sick, visiting churches, and shopping trips. There are also other social events held throughout the year.

Meetings: Monday-Friday, 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the A.F. Shaw Gym, 616 Fifth St. N.W.

Eligibility: 55 and above



Sons of Confederate Veterans

Contact: Jack Bridwell

Founded: A Colquitt County chapter was first chartered in 1927; the present group was chartered in 1987.

Eligibility: To become a member, one must prove his family connection to a Confederate soldier with honorable military records and enjoy the camaraderie of others who enjoy and appreciate studying this period.

Meetings: Every second Monday of the month, except December, at 7:30 p.m. at the Museum of Colquitt County History.

Southern Georgia Veterans Activities Committee

Contact: Clem Weldon, 985-5901; Hoyt Holland, 985-2334; Tom Davis, 941-5350; or Nancy Horne, 985-5089.

Purpose: To promote programs to honor veterans and to provide transportation for veterans needing medical attention to the Lake City, Fla., V.A. Medical Center.

Meetings: Last Tuesday in January, April, September, October, and November the Veteran’s Activities and Bus Committee meets 6 p.m. at the Museum of Colquitt County History. The bus to Lake City, Fla., V.A. Medical Center runs every Thursday (except holidays) leaving at 7 a.m. from the Wal-Mart parking lot.

Activities: May 2, May Day Parade in Doerun at 10 a.m.; May 24, bus trip to Andersonville National Cemetery includes picnic and annual Memorial Day Service; May 25, Cobb-Suncrest Memorial Garden service at 9:30 a.m.; June, entire month veterans memorabilia on display at museum; Nov. 11, memorial service on the Courthouse Square at 11 a.m.; Nov. 14, Veteran’s Day Prayer Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at the Colquitt County High School cafeteria; and December, Christmas parade.

Eligibility: Everyone who is willing to work to help meet their mission requirements.



S.W.A.T. (Sister With a Testimony Outreach Ministry)

Contact: Tonita Scott, 985-6468 or 921-5723, or Sharon Evans, 891-0750.

Purpose: Aid the youths through ages 8 until graduation with activities and help them be productive youth to their schools and community.

Activities: Organized a youth summit so they may speak out their concerns. Also help the elderly with errands, housecleaning, etc. They also help with all activities in the community like Relay for Life, Spring Fling and the parades.

Meetings: Twice monthly

Eligibility: All youths ages 8 through high school.

United Daughters of the Confederacy

Contact: Francine Rossman, 890-5562

Purpose: To honor Confederate ancestors/veterans and their history in order to understand this era of our country’s formation.

Meetings: First Tuesday of each month, September through May, at 3:30 p.m. at the Museum of Colquitt County History.

Eligibility: Women who can trace their genealogy to a Confederate veteran.



United Way of Colquitt County

Contact: Angela Castellow, executive director, 985-2627

Purpose: To organize, coordinate, and maximize the resources available to a diverse community to improve th quality of life.

Services: Provides fundraising and resources to meet community needs through charitable organizations. They provide information and referral services to individuals in need. A Day of Action is held annually for projects in the community.

Meetings: Board meets bi-monthly on the fourth Thursday of the month. Volunteers are always welcome.



Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4830

Contact: 985-7519.

Purpose: Honoring the dead by helping the living.

Meetings: Family dinner at 7 p.m. and meeting at 8 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.

Eligibility: Men and women who have shared the military experience in battle.



Ladies Auxiliary to VFW, Post 4830

Contact: 985-7519.

Purpose: Honoring the dead by helping the living.

Meetings: Family dinner at 7 p.m. and meeting at 8 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.

Eligibility: Mothers, daughters and sisters of men or women who have served in battle.



Women’s Federated Club of Moultrie

Contact: Patricia M. Merritt, president, 985-5743, or Barbara Jelks, vice president, 890-3245.

Purpose: The principal aims and purposes of this club are cultural, educational and recreational. Promote the education, social, moral, economic and religious welfare of women and children. Obtain for all women the opportunity of reaching the highest standards in all fields of human endeavor. They are affiliated with the Georgia, Regional and National Federation of Colored Women’s Club. Their motto is: “Lifting as We Climb.”

Activities: Projects are selected in response to the educational, political, economic, and social needs of our community. Scholarships have been given to deserving seniors at Colquitt County High School each year. They have organized Boys and Girls Clubs, and participated in the Colquitt County Schools’ annual spelling bee. The Federated Club and Southwest Georgia Bank present the Annual Birthday Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.

Meetings: Second Monday of each month September to May at 7 p.m.
